Dear LIFESPAN Friends,
Well, the election is over and some of us are pleased with the results and some of us are not.
We have lost some friends in our Michigan delegation and, nationally, the US House of Representatives has changed hands to a Democratic majority. In the US Senate, the Republican Party has retained, and increased, its majority. It is not uncommon for a president to see the House of Representatives change parties at the first mid-term election of his or her presidency.
Those of you who have been in the pro-life movement for many years have seen the ebb and flow of political parties a number of times. Change happens—sometimes for the good and sometimes for the not so good.
What does not change is the fundamental truth that human life begins at conception and will continue until natural death, and is deserving of our respect and protection. No other issue is as important as this. An elected official may seem “on target” with many other issues—health care, taxes, immigration, the death penalty, roads, marijuana, political redistricting, absentee ballots, social security, religious freedom, conscience protection and on and on. However, if he or she does not recognize that these concepts are meaningless if those who should be receiving them are not alive to benefit from them, then their positions are built on shifting sand.
So, if you are sad, take a day, be sad, wish it was other and then—- get busy! Continue to speak for human life, support the women who feel that abortion is the answer to their problem pregnancy. Help provide necessary support to women and families faced with the challenges of child care. Advocate for and pray for babies whose lives are in jeopardy. Help those in the winter of their lives to live as fully as possible until the Lord of Life calls them home. If you need help knowing what to say or do, call us and we can give you the tools to help save a life.
As I said, many of us have been here before. We carried on with a message filled with love and life. We can do it again.
