LIFESPAN OAKLAND/MACOMB REPRESENTATIVE MEMO: FEBRUARY 2019
Hi Folks,
Not much snow—good. Some sunshine—good. Temperature 28—not good!!
Well, the midterm elections were certainly interesting, particularly here in Michigan. While LIFESPAN is a non-partisan organization and cannot endorse or recommend candidates for political office, we do have to work with them once they are elected. The next 2-4 years won’t be easy. When we encourage you to contact your elected officials for some reason or other, please remember to do so respectfully, stating your position clearly, offer to assist him or her in any way you can to help achieve YOUR goals. You will probably receive a form letter in response, but letters, or emails, or phone calls really do make an impression.
As this is being written, the buses are scheduled to leave for Washington DC in 6 days. The government is still in shut down mode, but the buses will leave and the March for Life will be held. Some of the itinerary may change a little but the most important part will remain—thousands and thousands of people speaking for those who have no voice. We are the movement that everyone believed would go away after the Roe v Wade decision. Well, almost 50 years later and we are still here. You can’t simply ignore the fact that abortion kills children and wounds women.
There will be a new youth event in March, Ignite and Equip. Lots more information coming on this, but for now just know that we will be encouraging our young people to explain to others why being Pro-Life is the way go be!
It is time to start trying to get new ads for the resource book for our dinner on May 7th. As before, I am encouraging you to try and get one new ad for the book. They can come from anywhere—friends, families, businesses, churches, etc, etc. If you have someone help with your tax preparations, this is a perfect time to ask him or her for an ad. The worst thing anyone can do is say no.
I would like to offer a huge thank you to all of you who helped with Christmas cards this year. Unfortunately it seems that fewer and fewer people are sending cards that reflect “the reason for the season”. I don’t know how to solve the problem but hopefully we will think of something to offer at Christmas time.
This is also a good time to schedule the White Cross Display. You can’t get them into the ground yet, but spring brings softer soil and Easter—a great time to have the crosses. Cathy Abbott is our cross coordinator and you can call her to schedule your date. She prefers to receive calls in the afternoon. Her phone is 248-624-9406 and email is theabbotts@ameritech.net
I know the change in the leadership and majority in the US House of Representatives is a blow to the pro-life movement. But those of you who have been involved for a long time have heard us say before that protecting the unborn, the handicapped, and the elderly from death at the hands of those we might expect to protect them transcends politics, people, social correctness and rhetoric. The efforts to protect the defenseless will prevail simply because it is the right thing to do. Don’t be discouraged, don’t throw up your hands and say “This will never happen” or “I quit”. Light your candle and let it shine into the darkness. The light of all pro-life people will be so blindingly bright that the darkness of those who oppose us will disappear.
